The position is located in Uppsala within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. The research within the Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains andoceans, and from basic research on natural resources to research on how humans manage these resources in a sustainable way (for more information, see: www.geo.uu.se). The research of the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Programme within the Department focuses on the different dimensions of sustainable development. We consider the environment and its natural resources and ecosystem services as an overarching foundation for society and economy and aim at providing knowledge on how to utilize natural resources in a sustainable way. Our work involves considerations of both natural and social systems and their interactions, often adopting transdisciplinary approaches.

Duties
The position is part of the the LANDPATHS programme: The multifunctional LANDscapes of the future: barriers and drivers for transformation PATHwayS (In Swedish: LANDSVÄGAR Framtidens multifunktionella landskap – hinder och drivkrafter längs omställningens vägar), funded by Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket). The goal of the programme is to develop transformative governance strategies that foster sustainable practices in biodiverse, multifunctional landscapes.

The work of the researcher will be focused on:

  • The development of an overarching conceptual framework for the programme
  • Guiding consortium partners in best practice in stakeholder analysis and engagement (using state-of-the-art techniques)
  • Undertaking a scientific evidence review on governance arrangements and approaches related to multifunctional landscapes
  • The researcher will also have an important role in ongoing synthesis of the programme findings, development of evidence-informed recommendations and co-creation of other outputs.

The work will be done in close collaboration with consortium partners at different Universities and with relevant stakeholders. In addition, the researcher is expected to help coordinating activities in the case studies and engagement with stakeholders, and take part in project meetings and contribute to communication and dissemination activities.

In addition to research, the researcher is expected to co-supervise a PhD project within the programme and conduct some administration related tasks. If the need arises, the researcher can be involved in some of the Department’s teaching activities.

Requirements
The applicant shall have a university science degree (PhD) in political sciences, sustainability studies, environmental sciences or similar, and research interests relevant to the LANDPATHS programme. The successful candidate will have experience in policy and/or discourse analysis, stakeholder mapping and engagement techniques, and interdisciplinary research work.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record in academic and policy-targeted writing, demonstrating an ability to synthesise research findings for different audiences. The position requires good communication skills, both within the university as with outside partners. Good English language skills are a requirement

Additional qualifications
Skills and experiences in leading or working in collaborative projects, organising and facilitating stakeholder involvement processes, or engaging diverse land use stakeholders (e.g. in interviews, surveys, workshops) is an advantage. Skills in Swedish are desired. Experience of supervising PhD and MSc students to completion is an advantage.

The employment is a permanent position. Scope of employment 50 %. Starting date 2022-09-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
