The Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory has for many years hosted a research environment focused on the development of materials and their applications within the energy storage area: the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. We develop novel electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, evaluate and improve them with respect to battery performance, and study fundamental chemical processes and properties using both experimental and computational techniques. The research is, as such, both fundamental and applied.

Work duties
The primary focus of this research project will be studying and developing environmentally friendly materials for the realization of full iron-based rechargeable Li-ion batteries, with a particular emphasis on the anode material and its interface to enable convenient electrochemical features. Investigation of tailored electrolyte formulations to improve the interface behavior of the active materials in these Fe-based cells will play a central role, especially in determining the stability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and overall cycling features under different operation conditions. In-depth characterization and understanding of the structure of the materials, reacting interfaces and their nanostructured nature will be also of crucial importance to assess in detail the electrochemical features and charge storage mechanisms in these advanced iron-based Li-ion batteries.

Requirements
The applicant should have a PhD in Chemistry or Physics or equivalent, and be well acquainted with nanostructured materials and related characterization techniques, preferably with experience in electron microscopy, spectroscopy and complementary analyses. A solid background in electrochemistry and good knowledge of Li-ion batteries are highly recommended. Familiarity with electrode/electrolyte interfaces, study of interphases and surface analysis methods is also a clear advantage. The applicant should be able to develop the research activities in an autonomous, effective and organized way, as well as provide regularly periodical updates on the project in the form of written reports and presentations.

The candidate must have excellent capabilities in both written and oral English.

The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1st of August or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
