The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and successful biomolecular departments in Europe covering seven research programs in areas such as bioinformatics, microbiology and biophysics. We now offer a permanent position to work with advanced bioinformatics support within the framework of the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (www.nbis.se) and SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se), with a focus on evolutionary, comparative, and population genomics. The workplace is located at the SciLifeLab Uppsala node. In this creative environment NBIS has more than 50 bioinformaticians, system developers and data stewards located, together with several other SciLifeLab units and research groups.

Your future work assignments
Your tasks will consist of:
Data analysis within research projects is the primary task and will be carried out in collaboration with research groups at Swedish universities or industry. This work can range from shorter analysis tasks to deep collaborations within large nationally prioritized projects, where you would have the overall responsibility for the bioinformatics aspects. Your work will include data analysis and scientific deduction at an internationally competitive level regarding evolutionary processes such as positive/negative/diversifying/balancing selection, gene family contraction/expansion, recombination and gene conversion, evolution of repeat content and genome size, polyploidy and whole-genome duplications, and the genomic architecture of sex. It is expected that you can efficiently utilize both annotated genome assemblies and whole-genome resequencing data to analyze within and between species variation.
Your future workplace
You will work at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, at the Biomedical Center in Uppsala, Sweden. The National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) at SciLifeLab is a large national infrastructure in rapid development providing support, tools and training to the Swedish life science research community. NBIS comprises the SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform, and has more than 100 staff across Sweden, including 60 full-time senior bioinformaticians across Sweden working in our Support teams. As a Support team member, you will provide advanced bioinformatics analyses to some of the most scientifically exciting projects across Sweden. Examples of supported scientific areas range from precision medicine and diagnostics, to fundamental cell biology and evolutionary and environmental research. We are now expanding our capacity in evolutionary, comparative, and population genomics, with a particular focus on conifer genomics.
The work will include some amount of travel to other sites, as knowledge exchange is a key aspect of our operation and development, to maintain cutting-edge expertise for analysis of current and emerging data types.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who has
(i) a PhD or similar relevant working experience from advanced studies within bioinformatics or data science, in academia or industry
(ii) at least five years of documented experience from performing advanced scientific evolutionary, comparative, and/or population genomics analyses on large-scale data sets
(iii) ability to independently perform data analysis and scientific deduction at an internationally competitive level regarding evolutionary processes in eukaryotes, based on annotated genome assemblies and whole-genome resequencing data
(iv) proficiency in terminal-based work in a Linux environment and advanced scripting in a relevant scripting language (e.g Python, Perl or R)
(v) fluent oral and written English
(vi) strong ability in cooperation and communication
Additional qualifications
Postdoctoral studies are a strong merit but not a requirement. We believe that you have a keen interest in plant genomics and evolution. Experience of working with large datasets, and work with complex repetitive genomes, including transposable elements, is also a merit. Strong skills in experimental design and software development are also meriting. “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us, and expertise in the development of reproducible code by using code sharing platforms, workflow languages and container solutions is a strong merit.
