Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover of 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Duties
Postdoctoral fellow in the group of bulk materials within the research program for inorganic chemistry. The research focuses on how material properties are affected by chemical composition and crystal structure. For example, we study how the chemical composition affect the hydrogen absorption/desorption properties. An important area is new alloys for hydrogen compression and storage. The post doctor will work in the border area between chemistry, physics and materials theory; more specifically, with the synthesis and characterizations of new high entropy alloys for application in hydrogen compression. The project will be carried out in the group of Professor Martin Sahlberg at the Department of Chemistry-Angstrom. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University and Sandia National labs, US, as the international partner. Synthesis using high temperature methods such as electric arc furnace, induction furnace and possibly solid-gas methods will be used. Characterization will primarily be conducted using diffraction methods like single crystal X-ray diffraction, Neutron diffraction and in situ measurements using synchrotron radiation.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. Some administrative tasks may be included in the project.

Requirements
PhD degree in Materials chemistry / Inorganic chemistry or equivalent, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Materials chemistry / Inorganic chemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in chemistry and physics, as well as research on sustainable energy. For a position as a postdoctoral fellow it is required to have a doctoral degree or who have a foreign qualification deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate degree. Documented knowledge in high-temperature synthesis with different methods, diffraction (X-ray, electron and neutron) and general knowledge of structure-property relations is a requirement. Practical experience in development of novel metal hydride systems, and knowledge of different synthesis and analysis techniques are considered strong merits.

The ability to work both independently and in a team is essential. The application must include a CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, publications, and a short description of your research interests. The applications will be assessed according to the following criteria: compliance with eligibility criteria, previous experience in related fields as well as personal suitability. The research group is small but highly productive with high requirements on collaborative skills.
