Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

About the project
One of the most challenging problems in contemporary physics is to understand the strong force that binds together quarks and gluons into hadrons, e.g. protons and neutrons. Hadron physics is a wide, dynamic research field where the strong interaction is investigated in detail. The research of the Uppsala hadron physics group has so far been carried out within international collaborations at facilities in Italy (KLOE-2, Rome), China (BESIII, Beijing) and Germany (PANDA at FAIR, Darmstadt), and in close collaboration with local theoreticians. An overview of the research activities available at www.physics.uu.se/research/nuclear-physics/ .

The main physics interests of the Uppsala group are studies of hyperons - three-quark systems just like the protons but where one or several of the light quarks are replaced by one or several heavier quarks, e.g. strange quarks. By studying how hyperons are produced and how they decay, we can measure their internal structure at the femtometer level – that is, distances of 10-15 m! In this way, we gain insights into how the strong interaction binds quarks into the systems we are made of. The future antiproton facility PANDA at FAIR will offer unique possibilities to study several different aspects of hyperons, but already now, the predecessor PANDA@HADES is in operation. A large amount of data were collected in the first run in February 2022 and more will follow within the next few years.

Duties
We are looking for a  PhD student who can participate in the collection and analysis of the first data from PANDA@HADES, with focus on hyperon Dalitz decays and radiative decays. The PhD student is expected to participate in meetings and workshops abroad and work with simulations, reconstruction, analysis and interpretation of data, as well as experimental service tasks.

Qualifications
The candidate shall have completed her/his MSc studies in physics (or equivalent), including advanced courses in nuclear and/or particle physics. Basic knowledge in programming is required, as well as good oral and written proficiency in English and capability to work both independently and in a team.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 of september or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala

At present there are more employees with legal gender man than legal gender woman among doctoral students at Teknat. The university is striving for a more balanced distribution of legal gender within this category.

Applications
Should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates and diplomas, MSc thesis (or a draft thereof), a reference list and other documents, that the applicant wishes to claim.

For further information about the position, please contact: Karin Schönning (karin.schonning@physics.uu.se) or Michael Papenbrock (Michael.Papenbrock@physics.uu.se).

Please submit your application by 3 June 2022, UFV-PA 2022/1362.
