Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Duties
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a researcher position in ion beam-based physics. The candidate is expected to employ keV and MeV ion beams in basic and applied research. Contributions to and new initiatives in method development at the main experimental facilities will comprise an important part of the working duties. Engagement in developing advanced data analysis is expected. Applied research conducted mainly for ultra-thin film systems of relevance in electronics, optics, for hard coatings and in related interdisciplinary projects can be part of the working duties. Taking over responsibilities in collaboration projects with industry is anticipated. Supervision of undergraduate and PhD-student projects can be part of the working duties.

The major ion beam facilities at the Tandem laboratory at Uppsala University comprise of a 5 MV tandem accelerator, a 200 kV MICADAS compact radiocarbon dating system, ion implantation facilities with three beam lines as well as a system for low-energy ion scattering.

Prerequisites
The holder of a position as researcher must have a PhD degree in physics, engineering or equivalent.   Well-documented research experience using ion beams and handling ion beam instrumentation for material research, fundamental studies or materials modifications is expected. A good fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction is required. Experience in thin film technology is considered to be of advantage.
