Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. We are looking for a qualified and highly motivated candidate willing to carry out research and studies towards a PhD degree in the field of experimental astroparticle physics. The successful candidate will join the group participating in the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

Research topic
IceCube is the largest neutrino telescope in operation. It consists of 5160 optical modules installed at depths between 1450 m and 2450 m and covering one cubic kilometre of the very clear ice in the Antarctic glacier. IceCube detects neutrinos with energies from a few GeV up to a few PeV. More information can be found at www.icecube.wisc.edu. The IceCube collaboration is planning to increase the size of the current array in order to extend the sensitivity of the detector both to high and low energy neutrinos.

As a huge particle detector subject to a flux of high energetic neutrinos produced in the atmosphere or arriving from afar in the Universe, IceCube can be used to address many particle physics topics, like searches for dark matter, searches for new particles produced in high-energy cosmic ray or neutrino interactions, search for quantum gravity effects or tests of fundamental physical laws like Lorentz invariance. The concrete research project will be agreed with the successful candidate among several possible topics including, but not limited to, the ones mentioned above.

As a postgraduate student, you are expected to actively participate in the activities of the department. Additionally, as a member of a large international collaboration you will regularly present your work in collaboration meetings and are expected to perform some degree of service work for the collaboration within the duration of the position, in the form of duties not directly related to the subject of your thesis.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have an interest in working at the intersection between astrophysics and particle physics and a strong academic record. He/she should have completed a Master degree (or equivalent) in physics, with emphasis in Particle and/or Astroparticle Physics, or be in a position to obtain such a degree no later than end of August 2022.

Good communication skills in English is required.

Additional qualifications
Good programming and data analysis skills as well as previous experience in astrophysics and/or particle physics is a merit, as well as experience or interest in machine learning techniques.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
