The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The Department is looking for a student research assistant (amanuens) working 20% of a full-time position during mid-April to mid-October 2022, for work within the project “The Urban Dilemma” under the supervision of Emma Elfversson (project leader) and Kristine Höglund. 

Duties
The tasks consist of collecting and systematizing data about this year’s election in Kenya, with a focus on political rhetoric, violence, political institutions and conflict management. The data collection will be desk-based (reviewing secondary sources). Tasks may also entail miscellaneous writing or editing tasks.

Requirements:

  • Only those who are admitted to education at the undergraduate or advanced level may be employed as a teaching assistant/amanuens (HF Chapter 5, Section 10)
  • As an applicant, you are an active student in peace and conflict studies at Uppsala University (Bachelor or Master-level)
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Good knowledge of politics in Kenya
  • Documented ability to work independently
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good Swahili in speech and writing
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to collaborate

Additional qualifications

  • Studies at advanced level in peace and conflict studies
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work
  • Skills in any of the other languages spoken in the Kenyan context

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 12. Scope of employment 20% (possibility to increase working percentage during summer months - max 50 % in total). Starting date 18 April or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
