The Department of History of Science and Ideas is a dynamic research environment, with a particular emphasis on history of science, history of medicine, political history, global intellectual history, the history of education and media history. The Office for History of Science at the Department of History of Science and Ideas and announces one 4-year PhD position in a research programme on modes of natural inquiry in a global context from the late 17th until the early 20th Century. Techniques of knowledge production and interactions between knowledge communities are investigated with the object of analysing how, where and when the specific mode of natural inquiry called ‘science’ came into existence in the global past. Current research is exploring the historical and epistemological dimensions of the knowing body in the making, transmission and reconfiguration of knowledge between 1750–1850.

Duties
Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in departmental activities such as seminars, workshops, etc. The position is a 4- year full-time employment (starting salary is currently 28 300 SEK/month). The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.

Requirements
To be eligible the applicant must have a Master’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences relevant to research in history of science. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply. Swedish reading and listening comprehension is expected within two years.

Admission to a PhD programme at Uppsala University is highly competitive.

Application
Your application can be written in English or Swedish and should include: 1) a brief CV outlining your academic progress to date, 2) a copy of your MA thesis, or, if this is not complete, a summary and table of contents as well as at least one sample section, 3) a statement (of no more than 1200 words) outlining your proposed research. This outline should describe why you want to do a PhD, a research question you find interesting and a discussion of how this is related to the current state of research. The outline should also have a short discussion of possible sources for answering your question and methodological considerations regarding the potential of these sources, 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades, 5) name and e-mail addresses of at least two referees.

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 01-09-2022 or as otherwise agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
