Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University focuses on subjects that range from the Earth's core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans, and from basic research on natural resources to research on how humans can sustainably manage these resources. Duties
The duties as a postdoctoral researcher mainly include conducting research. As a postdoctoral researcher, it is expected that results are compiled and presented internally to colleagues, published in relevant journals and presented at international conferences.

The recruited postdoctoral researcher will work within the framework of a project funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) and work in partnership with the project leaders. The aim of the project is to develop a method to diagnose the presence of magnetosomal magnetite or greigite in natural sediments using a combination of magnetic susceptibility and magnetic remanence. Well characterized natural samples will be used to test the method, which may subsequently be applied to investigate the depth of biogeochemical remanence (BGRM) acquisition. Depending on the interests and experience of the recruited postdoctoral researcher the project may include laboratory studies of BGRM acquisition under controlled conditions. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to take part in fieldwork sampling (including offshore research vessels) and sub-sampling, lead the design of measurement protocols and undertake laboratory analyses. Results will be presented and published in agreement with the project leaders.

A postdoctoral position can also include teaching to a maximum of 20 % of full time.

Requirements
PhD degree in geology, geophysics or physical geography or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in geology, geophysics or physical geography. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Applicants must have advanced knowledge and laboratory experience of magnetic measurement techniques used in environmental magnetism (including palaeomagnetism and mineral magnetism). Applicants must have documented ability to compile and interpret empirical data sets and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The assessment of the applications is based primarily on the applicant’s ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater emphasis is placed on the quality of individual scientific works than on the number of publications. Very good communication skills in English speech and writing is a necessary requirement.

Personal qualities, such as commitment and independence, are equally valuable. Consideration will be given to good collaboration ability, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant, through his or her experience and competence, is judged to complement and strengthen the ongoing research work within the department and contribute to its future development.

Additional qualifications
Fieldwork experience. Experience of magnetic measurement instrumentation.

Instructions for application
The application must include a personal letter, CV, list of publications, digital copy of the doctoral dissertation, copies of relevant grades and diplomas, as well as letters of recommendation and/or contact information for 2-3 references.
