The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. Duties/Project description
Detection and characterization of exoplanets to a large extent define the front of scientific efforts in modern astrophysics. Major efforts in developing of existing and constructing new research infrastructures is driven by the desire to understand the diversity of planetary systems, the history of the Solar system and the conditions required to support life. The Terra Hunting Experiment (THE, http://www.terrahunting.org) is an international project driven by several EU and UK universities aimed at constructing an advanced spectroscopic instrument dedicated to detecting analogues of our Solar system, with an Earth-like planet on a one-year orbit around a Sun-like star. The project is in the final stage of construction with the final assembly and commissioning planned for 2023 and UU has responsibilities for two crucial systems of the new facility: a spectropolarimeter and a laser frequency comb. The survey will take at least 10 years and during this time the instrument and all its subsystems should remain stable to unprecedented level.
The division of astronomy and space physics is now looking for a research assistant (forskningsassistent) with the task to complete the characterization of the UU subsystems, prepare and perform their assembly and participate in the commissioning at the INT telescope on La Palma. The result of this effort should be the delivery of these two subsystems to the start of survey in late 2023, followed by an assessment report of the subsystems performance to be completed by spring 2024.
Requirements
To qualify for this employment as a research assistant you must have at least Master in Astronomy or Physics and extensive expertise of working with astronomical instrumentation. Furthermore, candidates should be fluent in English and have the capacity to work both independently and in collaboration with the team.
Additional qualifications
Practical experience with optical and polarization components and good knowledge of high-resolution stellar spectroscopy will be considered merits.
About the application
Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, certificates and diplomas, and contact details for at least one reference person.
