Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).Ror more information see: www.geo.uu.se

The Centre of Natural Hazard and Disaster Science (CNDS) is a research center that brings together social, engineering and earth scientists from different departments at Uppsala University, Swedish Defense University, and Karlstad University (www.cnds.se). The research conducted at CNDS aims to improve the ability to prevent and deal with natural hazards and disasters. For more information see www.cnds.se.

The Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, which is affiliated to CNDS, is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers (2-year positions) in natural hazards. They will contribute to the Department’s strategic research area of Natural Hazards. This theme deals with the drivers, processes and consequences of extreme events of natural origins, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms, floods, droughts, and landslides. CNDS’s scope extends from natural hazards, to their impact on physical infrastructure and society (risk) and disaster mitigation actions, including contacts with public authorities and industry. Current areas of focus include assessment of natural hazards individually and in combination (multi-hazards), triggered hazard events (e.g. earthquake stimulated landslides or dam failures leading to flooding) and cascading consequences for society (risk).
