Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Project description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in stellar astrophysics.  The successful applicant will work towards the general goal of advancing our understanding of stars and of the Milky Way.  Specific duties will include planning and carrying out observations of stellar spectra, and/or analysing stellar spectra using state-of-the-art atomic data and 3D non-LTE models, in collaboration with members of the Theoretical Atomic Astrophysics group (https://www.physics.uu.se/research/astronomy-and-space-physics/research/fundamental/theoretical-atomic-astrophysics/).

The position is funded by the Wallenberg grant Probing charge- and mass-transfer reactions on the atomic level, and the Swedish Research Council (VR) grant Accurate compositions of Sun-like stars.  The position includes adequate funding for computers and travel.  The successful applicant will also have the possibility to access SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing), as well as a range of observational facilities such as the ESO (European Southern Observatory) and the SST (Swedish Solar Telescope).

Requirements
To qualify for this employment as a postdoc, the applicant must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in astrophysics. The PhD degree must have been obtained before the start of the employment and no more than three years prior to the application deadline; however, periods of e.g. sick leave or parental leave are not counted.  Furthermore, candidates should be fluent in English and have the capacity to work both independently and in collaboration with the team.

Additional qualifications
Experience, supported by publications, in observational and/or theoretical studies of the spectra of cool stars, will be given high weight.  Expertise in the study of stellar atmospheres, stellar physics in general, the study of the Milky Way through Galactic archaeology, as well as in radiative transfer, atomic and molecular processes, and data analysis will also be considered merits.

About the application
Applications should contain a cover letter of no longer than one page that describes the applicant, their qualifications, and how their research interests align with the aim of this project.  It should also contain a CV that includes contact information for at least two reference persons, copies of relevant degrees, and a full publication list.  Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of least two years and at most three years according to central collective agreement.  Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 September or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
