Duties
The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral position in observational astrophysics. The position is hosted by the Astronomy and Space Physics division.
The postdoctor is expected to do develop software in the framework of two large European research projects: ChETEC-INFRA, a network for nuclear astrophysics (https://www.chetec-infra.eu/) and ELT/ANDES (previously ELT/HIRES), the high-resolution spectrograph for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (https://elt.eso.org/instrument/HIRES/). In both projects, data-analysis systems (DAS) are to be developed and implemented which are capable of determining different astrophysical parameters from high-resolution stellar spectra. Pipelines of this sort already exist, but need to be adapted to meet the specific scientific requirements of the above-mentioned projects. The pipeline for ChETEC-INFRA is to be applied to various spectroscopic data sets within the time frame of the employment.
Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, in Physics, Astronomy or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Solid knowledge of Python is required, as is proficiency in written and spoken English. The successful applicant needs to be capable of leading the development work in an international, geographically distributed team.
Additional qualifications
Experience from previous work on high-resolution stellar spectroscopy and analysis pipelines will be considered a merit. A proficiency test may be done in the recruitment process.
Your application should contain a letter describing yourself and your qualifications and research interests (max 2 pages). It should also contain a CV including contact information for at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone number), a copy of your PhD degree certificate, and a complete publication list. Personal circumstancesthat may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV. The application should be written in English.
