Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 900 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the Department of Medical Sciences can be found at www.medsci.uu.se

The Antibiotic research unit conducts in vitro research on antibiotics and resistant bacteria. The group works in close collaboration with Uppsala University Hospital. We aim to generate new knowledge on how the effects of available antibiotics can be enhanced by optimizing dosing or by using combinations of two or more substances. We are now looking for a fulltime Postdoc for 2 years.

Duties
You will participate in a project where the goal is to evaluate which dosing regimens and combinations of antibiotics are the most effective to treat and prevent the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria, in particular Gram-negative bacteria. The work will mainly consist of laboratory experiments where the effect of antibiotics is examined with different methods, e.g., MIC-testing, time-kill experiments using static or dynamic concentrations of antibiotics and automated microscopy with image analysis (oCelloScope). The results may also be correlated to the genetic profiles of the bacteria. Depending on your background, programming may be included in e.g., Python for data extraction from the oCelloScope, controlling dosing pumps and other more technical assignments. You will work independently with these methods, in consultation with the employer and from given frameworks within the project. General assignments needed to keep the lab in order will also be included.

Requirements
PhD degree in relevant subject area, for example microbiology or molecular biology, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in this area. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Computer proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word and other common programs is required, as well as very good written and oral knowledge of English.

Additional qualifications
Experience of working with antibiotics and resistance development is desirable, as well as experience of sequence analysis from whole genome sequencing. A big plus is if you also have technical skills and experience of programming in Python or similar. The applicant should have a good practical touch in the laboratory and a good ability to work independently. When recruiting, personal qualities like conscientiousness, collaboration and communication skills will be of great importance.
