Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The department and projects Societies at risk, the ViEWS component of Uppsala University's DEMSCORE project (project manager Håvard Hegre), and “Crossing the Rubicon? The Dynamics of Restraint in Civil War” (project leader Johan Brosché), are now looking for a researcher for a six- months full-time employment. Employment will start 1 July, or per agreement.

Duties
The researcher will have the following tasks (teaching may also be included, max 20% of the employment scope);

  • Develop a set of missing-data handling procedures for the ViEWS infrastructure, in collaboration with the ViEWS programmer team
  • Write academic article on best practices for missing-data handling for prediction models
  • Specify Markov models for inclusion in the production systems of VIEWS
  • Specify extreme-value regression models for testing and possible inclusion in the production systems of VIEWS
  • Explore bootstrapping methods for estimation of prediction uncertainty in the ViEWS system
  • Contribute to an application of extreme-value regression models within the project Crossing the Rubicon? The Dynamics of Restraint in Civil War.

Requirements

  • PhD in peace and conflict research (the degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment)
  • Training in statistics, at master degree level or higher
  • Knowledge of R and Python
  • Experience with formulation of prediction models.
