Uppsala University, Department of Pharmacy

Do you want to be part of a research environment committed to address datadriven modelling challenges to advance precision medicine? Then this postdoctoral position is aimed for you! Mathematically oriented candidates, researchers from backgrounds within data-driven modeling, researchers from neighboring applications of scientific machine learning or Pharmacometricians are welcome and encouraged to apply. This position is part of a joint collaboration between the two largest research programs in Sweden, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), see WASP, and the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for DataDriven Life Science (DDLS), see Scilifelab, with the ultimate goal of solving ground-breaking research questions across disciplines.

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on data-driven research, within fields essential for improving the people´s lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability. The programme will train the next generation of life scientists and create a strong computational and data science base. The program aims to strengthen national collaborations between universities, bridge the research communities of life sciences and data sciences, and create partnerships with industry, healthcare and other national and international actors.

The focus of the post-doctoral project is development of novel methods for pharmacometric covariate modeling such as methods for simultaneously learning the structure and parameters of covariate models, to improve pharmacometrics predictors suited for individualized precision medical therapies. The project will develop and test the novel methods using registry data from the National Diabetes Registry and the Swedish MS Registry as well as clinical data sets.

This call is for a postdoc within DDLS at Uppsala University. There will be a twinned postdoc position within WASP at Lund’s University. The project involves close collaboration between the two postdocs. The Lund position will have a stronger focus on novel method development; the project in Uppsala will have a stronger application focus.

The Department of Pharmacy at Uppsala University is an interdisciplinary environment at the center of the pharmaceutical arena. With frontline research, first-class education and extensive collaborations we constitute a driving force in the development of our academic field. In this inspiring environment our rich diversity of research groups, several of international prominence, develop and conduct work of great scientific importance. Among our core competences are enabling formulations, computational modelling and simulations, in vitro ADME models, advanced in vivo methods and societal aspects from optimizing the use of drugs in individuals to societal pharmaceutical policies. Together, we form a unique cluster of academic competences within pharmaceutical sciences, playing a key role in shaping the future of pharmacy in both Sweden and globally.

Our scientific focus areas in selection:

Biological drugs, Drug Delivery, Molecular Pharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics, Pharmacometrics, Pharmacoepidemiology, Social Pharmacy

Duties
The postdoctoral position will focus on methodological research in covariate modeling such as the development of methods for simultaneous identification of covariate structures and covariate effects, with the aim of creating more predictive models for, for example, individualized drug treatments. The project will use registry data from the national diabetes registry, the Swedish MS registry and also clinical data.

The research group
The project is linked to the research group in pharmacometrics. The group has about 30 members active in both methodological and applied research. For more information about the research group, see Pharmacometrics.

Qualification requirements
For employment as a postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences, biostatistics, epidemiology or in another relevant field. Solid experience of data analysis and of working in R.

The researcher is expected to take their own initiatives and run the project independently, but also collaborate with the group's other members and our partners at Lund University. Finally, we attach great importance to personal suitability. Good communication skills, especially in English, in writing and orally are necessary.

Desirable / meritorious in other respects
Experience of working in the program NONMEM or equivalent. Knowledge of pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics.
