Uppsala University, The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS)

Chartered by the Government of Sweden as an institute for advanced study, SCAS is a national
scientific institution hosted by Uppsala University. The Collegium is a scholarly community where Fellows pursue research of their own choosing in a context of interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation. Since its foundation in 1985, it strives to protect and nurture independent inquiry, collaborative and deep thinking, and to emphasize the importance of academic freedom worldwide. The Collegium is open to Fellows across the range of the human and social sciences, as well as from the natural sciences. Every academic year SCAS hosts 30-35 Fellows from all over the world. As the activities of the Collegium have developed, short term stays for groups as well as individual researchers are becoming a regular feature.  SCAS offers a research environment that enables concentration on research, but also encourages discussion and cooperation across disciplinary and national boundaries.

SCAS has numerous connections with scientific institutions abroad, not least as member of international networks of similar institutes. English is the most commonly used language for seminars, symposia and publications. This also includes most of the correspondence at SCAS.

To strengthen and deepen our scientific work we are now looking for a Research Coordinator with a doctorate and an interest in research across disciplinary boundaries, keen on working in an international academic environment. You will be working closely with the Principal, which will imply a high pace and a great variation in the kinds of tasks you will be faced with. Within your area of responsibility, planning, preparedness and the ability to prioritize will be important factors for success.

Duties
As Research Coordinator one important duty is to actively cooperate with and support the Principal in the design and implementation of activities that further our scientific mission. Among other things planning, organising, implementing and evaluating workshops, seminars and symposia are included. A central duty is also to participate in the communication efforts, e.g. through contributing to the production of qualified scientific texts for different audiences and through different channels, such as web pages, newsletters and printed material. Additional duties include coordinating visits and meetings, and collaborating with external parties. SCAS is a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment and in order to perform well it is important that the Research Coordinator actively participates in the community building. This requires physical presence at the Collegium and occasionally work in the evenings. The Research Coordinator will have an important role in the strategic planning at the Collegium.

Requirements

The Research Coordinator should hold a PhD and have a track record of cooperating with researchers from different disciplines. Documented experience in planning, organising, administrating and following up scientific events is needed for the position. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are required as well as a good sense of communicative genres.

The person we are seeking should be able to show good administrative and organisational skills and have knowledge of and interest in research beyond their own field and be engaged in research development issues. The candidate should be a self-starter, have good ability to cooperate, be structured and have good communicative skills.

Additional qualifications

For this position it is valuable that the candidate can show documented experience in:

  • Participation in inter- or multidisciplinary research projects
  • Work in multidisciplinary or integrative research environments, especially across faculty boundaries
  • Cooperation with researchers and organisations in other parts of the word
  • Voluntary duties within academia, such as e.g. programme coordination, review assignments, board appointments or other engagements in scientific organisations
  • Communication about scientific work and results to different audiences
  • Cooperation with different interest groups and organisations outside of the applicant’s own research field
  • Research administration within externally funded research projects, such as planning, organising, administering and reporting projects
  • Good oral and written communications skills in Swedish and other relevant languages

During the hiring process emphasis will be placed on personality and the social and communicative skills needed to perform well. In filling this position SCAS aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

The application should contain the following:

  • A short letter outlining the applicant's view of the position in question
  • A brief account of experience relevant for the position in question (CV)

The application together with appendices should be submitted electronically through the recruitment system Varbi.
