Research at the department is conducted within all these areas. The department has around 1500 students per year and offers approximately 60 different courses. We are now recruiting an Associate Senior Lecturer in English with a specialization in American Literature.

Subject Area

Duties
The purpose of the position is that the candidate should be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain the necessary qualifications as regards research as well as teaching in order to meet the criteria for appointment to a position as Senior Lecturer. The duties comprise research within the relevant area of specialization (50% of full time) as well as teaching and administration (no more than 50% of full time). The teaching duties will concern both a broad selection of specialized as well as general courses in English at undergraduate and advanced levels and subject-related courses for teacher-training students, such as literary theory, American literature and culture from the 18th century to the present day, literature in English, proficiency in English, English for specific purposes, and oral and/or written production in English. Supervision and course coordination, administration, and development also form part of the teaching duties. Both on-campus and distance teaching may be assigned. As an Associate Senior Lecturer, the candidate is expected to actively apply for external research funding, to stay aware of developments within their field of specialization, and to participate in the development of research and teaching conducted in the department and at the faculty.

Eligibility
Applicants are eligible for employment as Associate Senior Lecturer if they hold a doctoral degree or have the equivalent academic competence, have demonstrated pedagogical competence, and have the personal characteristics required in order to carry out the duties that the position involves well. Precedence will be given to applicants who completed their PhD projects or reached the equivalent competence no more than five years before the deadline for applications. In order to meet the requirement of pedagogical competence, the applicant should have completed at least five weeks of relevant training in tertiary-level teaching or acquired the equivalent competence in other ways. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment.

Documented ability to teach in English is a requirement. The candidate should have the personal characteristics required to carry out the duties of the position well. Such characteristics include flexibility, the capacity to work well with others, and a sense of responsibility.

It is a requirement that the applicant’s academic, pedagogical, and professional competence is relevant to the subject area and the duties that the position involves.

Assessment criteria
In the ranking of eligible applicants, special weight will be given to academic and pedagogical

competence. Owing to the nature of a tenure-track position, the applicants’ academic and pedagogical qualifications should be assessed primarily from a qualitative perspective. An applicant’s quantitative advantage as regards qualifications should thus not be decisive if it can be explained by them having been active in academia for a longer period of time.

Equal weight will be accorded the assessment of the applicant’s competence in teaching and in research.

In appointing applicants to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a qualitative, holistic assessment of relevant competence and skills, is judged to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and contributing to the positive development of the work carried out at the department.

Academic competence: When the applicant’s research competence is assessed, the greatest weight will be accorded to the quality of published research in the subject area as regards the doctoral thesis as well as other publications. Research on US literature from the 18th and 19th centuries will be considered especially advantageous. The scope of the applicant’s research as regards breadth as well as depth will be given weight. The merit value of having been granted external research funding in competition with other researchers will also be taken into account. Plans for future research as described in the research plan (three pages in length) that should be enclosed with the application will also be accorded weight.

Pedagogical competence: Pedagogical competence concerns educational and teaching qualifications, including supervision and examination. When pedagogical competence is assessed, the quality of the applicant’s teaching is accorded the greatest weight. The extent of the applicant’s teaching experience, that is, breadth and depth at different levels, is also of importance. The ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to connect teaching to research, is taken into account. A plan that describes how the applicant intends to develop their pedagogical skills during the period covered by the position should be enclosed with the application.

Other competence: Administrative and management competence will be given weight. Moreover, the ability to interact with others as regards research and education, both within the field (e.g. research networks) and with society outside academia, will be considered advantageous. In addition, special weight will be accorded to the candidate’s potential to contribute to the future development of research as well as teaching within the subject area at the Department of English.

All qualifications should be well documented so that quantity as well as quality can be assessed.

Additional information
Parental leave, part-time work owing to caring for children, union work, military service or similar activities are considered work experience and should be included in the applicant’s CV.

The candidate is expected to spend most of their working hours at the department in Uppsala.

In the assessment of academic qualifications, factors such as grants from external funding organizations, publications in outlets that are relevant to the subject area, presentations and similar activities at scholarly conferences, workshops, etc., and other relevant qualifications within the subject (e.g. having been awarded the title of Docent) will be accorded weight.

Pedagogical competence: The candidate should have completed at least ten weeks’ worth of training in tertiary education that is relevant to their duties as Associate Senior Lecturer or have the equivalent competence. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, the documented ability to plan, develop, teach, and evaluate courses at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as experience of doctoral supervision, will be accorded weight. It is a requirement for promotion that the candidate should have documented teaching experience from a wide range of courses within the subject area; degree of specialization, teaching level, and forms of teaching are all taken into account in this regard.
