Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM; https://icm.uu.se) is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students.

The position is available in Sebastian Deindl’s group in the Molecular Systems Biology programme. The ERC-funded group of Professor Deindl focuses on investigating the molecular mechanisms of protein machines in the regulation of gene expression using a highly multidisciplinary approach that combines structural and biochemical approaches with single-molecule imaging (e.g., Marklund et al., Science 2022; Bacic et al, eLife 2021; Marklund et al., Nature 2020). For more information about the research in the Deindl group, please visit: https://deindl-lab.com.

We offer you to become part of a dynamic, ambitious group and a stimulating multidisciplinary environment where you will work closely with experts in biophysics, biochemistry, structural and molecular biology.

Duties
As a postdoctoral researcher on this project, you will be working towards the structure determination of nucleosomes in complex with chromatin-binding factors. The focus is on using novel cryo-EM analyses (such as time-resolved sample preparation) to gain new mechanistic insights into the interactions of various chromatin remodelers with nucleosomes, and their role in the regulation of DNA repair.

Requirements
PhD degree in structural biology, (bio)physics, computer science/engineering, or in another related area which the employer considers as equivalent. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a qualified and motivated candidate with extensive experience in single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy including sample preparation, data acquisition, image processing, and atomic model building and refinement. Moreover, hands-on experience with the operation of electron microscopes (Glacios, Arctica or Krios) is required, as well as proficiency with the administration of Linux operating systems (installation, configuration and management of research software such as RELION, cryoSPARC and other programs relevant to cryoEM and structural biology).

Very good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. We value personal characteristics such as good co-operative skills, and a creative and self-motivated personality.

Additional qualifications
Basic knowledge of computer hardware, for maintenance and upgrade of workstations, as well as experience in managing large cryo-EM data sets (timely retrieval from facilities, processing, interpretation, archiving and deposition into the public databases PDB, EMDB and EMPIAR). Furthermore, familiarity with management of multiple user accounts and configuration of a job queuing system for cryo-EM analyses are considered a merit.

Your application should include:

  • Cover letter where you describe yourself, your research interest, experiences and why you are interested in and suitable for the position (maximum 1 page)
  • CV containing your education, other qualifications and publication list (maximum 2 pages)
  • Copy of your PhD diploma
  • Contact information (E-mail and telephone) to at least two referees
