The Department is now recruiting a postdoc researcher to support the project “Politics of Protection: Explaining International Responses to Atrocities” (with funding from a Wallenberg Academy Fellowship), headed by Professor Lisa Hultman. The position is for two years and starting 1 May 2022.

Duties
The overall purpose of the project is to systematically examine how the international community responds to violence against civilians in armed conflict. This project is part of a larger research agenda that also explores the consequences of such interventions. The postdoc will be responsible for research on the politics of protection in relation to conflict-related sexual violence and for developing research on diplomatic engagements to tackle violence against civilians.

The postdoc will primarily conduct independent research related to the project theme in consultation with the PI, but is also expected to collaborate with others in the research team and take on some administrative tasks related to the project. The position comes with additional funding for research-related costs. The candidate is encouraged to take on some teaching at the department.

Requirements
PhD degree in peace and conflict research or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in peace and conflict research. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

The successful candidate must have documented expertise (in the form of peer-reviewed publications) on international interventions and conflict-related sexual violence, as well as a demonstrated track-record of data collection and quantitative analysis. Familiarity with the subject matter is crucial. They must also be fluent in English (both in speech and writing).

3. Degree certificate or official transcript confirming that the candidate has fulfilled all requirements for a degree.

Assessment:
Candidates are assessed based on:

• 1) demonstrated research skills, particularly in conducting theory-driven empirical research (strong methodological skills are highly valued)
• 2) the potential for contributing to the project
• 3) publications relevant to the project theme
• 4) personal suitability to perform the tasks.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date 1 May 2022. Placement: Uppsala.
