Qualification and eligibility requirements: A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 3). A general eligibility requirement in Section 5 of the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO) is that the applicant must have the ability to cooperate and otherwise meet the requirements for suitability needed to perform the duties well. Furthermore, according to Section 31 of the Appointment Regulations, the research expertise must have been demonstrated by independent research contributions and by the applicant's high-quality merits, as evaluated internationally. The applicant shall have demonstrated skill in the planning, initiation, leadership and development of research and the ability to obtain research grants in competition, as well as well-documented skills in supervising doctoral studies. The applicant's contribution to the international and national academic community shall be assessed on the basis of the quality and scope of academic publications. The requirements on the acquisition of international qualifications shall be assessed with due consideration for the nature and specific conditions of the discipline.

According to Section 32 of the Appointment Regulations, teaching skills must be demonstrated through extensive qualifications in education and teaching as described in Section 22 of the Appointment Regulations. Furthermore, the applicant shall demonstrate well-documented skills in supervision at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. The applicant must otherwise comply with what is prescribed in the Faculty of Social Sciences Guidelines supplementing the University’s Appointment Regulations (section 2b).

It is a requirement that the teaching skills, research expertise and professional skills are relevant to the subject content of the position and the duties to be included in the appointment.

Assessment criteria: Research expertise, management expertise and teaching expertise

Assessment criteria applicable to academic appointments at the University consist partly of the degree to which the applicant possesses the expertise required to qualify for the position and partly of the other stated assessment criteria (see below).

In the appointment of this professorship, significance will be assigned to research expertise, leadership skills, and teaching skills. When rank-ordering eligible applicants, emphasis will primarily be placed on research expertise and secondly on leadership and teaching skills. Equal consideration will be given to the evaluation of all three assessment criteria. The assessment criteria will be weighted so that an applicant who is judged to be significantly more qualified in terms of leadership and teaching skills than a slightly more skilled applicant in terms of research expertise can be ranked ahead of the latter.

Research expertise: In the assessment of research expertise, research quality shall be the primary consideration. The comprehensiveness of research, mainly with regard to depth and breadth, shall also be assigned significance. Furthermore, the ability to establish and maintain local, national and international research networks and to obtain external funding for research in competition shall be assigned significance. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education, as well as demonstrated ability for positive collaboration both within the academic community and with the rest of society shall also be assigned significance.

Research expertise must have been demonstrated through independent research contributions that both qualitatively and quantitatively considerably exceed that which is required of a docent.

The applicant must have supervised, as a main supervisor, at least one PhD candidate to completion, unless special circumstances apply.

Leadership skills are demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate others and provide them with the prerequisites for effectively achieving common goals. Further examples of demonstrated skills include the ability to coordinate a group, foster commitment, encourage participation and create job satisfaction, as well as the ability to manage conflicts.

Experience of departmental responsibilities, and associated developmental work or equivalent are considered meritorious. Other collegial responsibilities, demonstrated by the performance of other leadership and/or administrative tasks, participation on boards/working groups or other commitment to the inner workings of a department or university is also considered a merit.

Teaching skills: In the assessment of teaching skills, educational quality shall be the primary consideration. Scope, both in terms of breadth and depth, shall also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching at all levels will be assigned significance. The ability to link teaching to research, based on research in the discipline in question, in didactics, and in higher education is assigned significance. The ability to interact with stakeholders within and outside the University on issues related to learning and teaching in higher education shall also be afforded consideration. It is considered meritorious for the applicant to be able to teach in both Swedish and English.

Whenever the University appoints a new teacher, the successful candidates will be those who, based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and expertise, are deemed to have the best conditions for carrying out and developing the duties in question and for positively contributing to the development of the organisation.

Applicants' merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

The Recruitment Committee may use interviews, trial-lectures and and may take references. Applicants should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into their professional skills and personal qualities that are of relevance to the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and preferred working methods.

Personal circumstances (such as full or part-time parental leave, trade union appointments, military service, or other) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).
