The Limnology program engages in research and education on the ecology and biogeochemistry of inland waters, from the microscopic to the global scale.
Project description: Lake sediments constitute a carbon sink that has a cooling effect on climate. Current estimates of the global-scale magnitude of the lake carbon sink are however very uncertain as they build on extrapolation from few, geographically biased measurements. This project aims at building a process-based model of organic carbon burial in lake sediment, which will be validated at different scales, and then driven by the big data supplied by the climate science community through the ISIMIP project: globally-gridded and daily time-step data on climate, land use, water flow, and the thermal structure of >17,000 lakes. This allows a robust global estimation of the lake sediment carbon sink to be achieved, which is consistent with other efforts to simulate the Earth system. The project is financed through a grant from the Swedish Research Council.
Duties: Conduct research within the specified subject area. In particular:
Qualifications required: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Earth System Science, Biogeochemistry, Limnology, Oceanography, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or similar. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Extensive experience of dynamic modelling, including model construction, validation and application, is required. Solid knowledge of biogeochemistry is required. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as independence and teamwork skills. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.
Qualifications desired: Experience in aquatic biogeochemistry. Experience with numerical lake or ocean models, literacy in computer programing, and experience in computer languages such as FORTRAN, PYTHON or R. Previous experience working with Earth System Models. Experience in supercomputing and parallel processing. The ability to manage and statistically analyze large data sets produced by numerical models.
Salary: Individual salary.
Starting date: 2021-05-01, or as agreed.
