Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. Project description
Natural aquatic systems are rich in extremely complex mixtures of organic compounds. At present, no synthetic or isolated compounds are available that are representative of one of the main compound classes thought to be present in these mixtures; carboxylic rich alicyclic molecules. In this project, examples of this compound class will be synthesized and analytically compared with natural complex mixtures. The results will be used to better understand the Earth’s ecosystem processing of carbon and to evaluate how changing terrestrial conditions will affect export of carbon from land to ocean.

The advertised position is with the research group of Jeffrey Hawkes. The Hawkes Group is working in the fields of environmental analytical chemistry and complex mixture analysis. Read more about their research at https://www.jeffreyhawkes.com

Duties
The candidate will be responsible for synthesizing alicyclic compounds and assessing their purity by NMR. You will be trained in the use of high resolution LCMS and will then be responsible for conducting comparative analysis of the synthesized compounds with natural extracts.

Requirements
PhD degree in organic chemistry or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in organic chemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

It is required to have experience in standard synthesis, interpreting NMR spectra to assess synthesized compound purity, and to have experience with synthesis of carbocycles.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to carry out the intended research. The ability of critical and analytical thinking are necessities and will therefore be valued at the selection of candidates. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Additional qualifications
Experience operating liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry instrumentation and to have worked in a research laboratory for at least one year after completion of the Ph.D, is considered as an advantage.
