Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover just over 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Work duties
Macromolecular Chemistry deals with the synthesis and characterization of macromolecules/polymers and has developed leading competence in polymers and biomaterials especially for life science and in vivo use. For the research project in question, the research assistant will be involved in the design and development of wet-tissue adhesives that can be used to seal corneal perforations along with the possibility to be used for delivery of cells or therapeutic factors. Macromolecular Chemistry has developed several biomaterials earlier for the delivery of cells or therapeutic factors. The aim of this project is to design, synthesize, and evaluate such biomaterials which can be used as wet-tissue adhesives and deliver cells or therapeutic factors to repair and regenerate perforated corneas. The work mainly consists of:

  • Chemical modification of ECM-derived polymers.
  • Bio-orthogonal crosslinking for preparation of hydrogel with potential as a wet-tissue adhesive along with delivery of cells or therapeutic factors.
  • Chemical and mechanical characterization of hydrogels.
  • Characterization of tissue adhesives.

Requirements
Applicants must have:

  • An exam within the field of biomaterials or nanotechnology.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Hands-on experience and good knowledge on chemical modification of gelatin, collagen, elastin, and their characterization, hydrogel preparation using bio-orthogonal crosslinking reaction, chemical characterization of hydrogels, characterization of hydrogel physical properties, and mechanical characterization of hydrogels by rheology and tensile tests.
  • Hands-on experience and good knowledge in characterization of tissue adhesives using tensile lap-shear tests.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional requirements
Preliminary knowledge in cell culture and some knowledge in characterizing tissue adhesive using burst pressure are benefecial.
