The Department of Mathematics conducts research and education at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels within mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The Department has about 120 employees, including about 30 postgraduate students. The number of annual students at the undergraduate and graduate level is about 600. The department has three research programs: analysis and probability, algebra and geometry, and applied mathematics and statistics. The present position is within the research program analysis and probability.
Description of Subject Area: The subject area comprises mathematical analysis with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and deep learning. Relevant subareas include, for example, approximation theory, dynamical systems, ergodic theory, functional analysis, metric theory, harmonic analysis, optimal transport, and partial and stochastic differential equations. The employment is funded by the Wallenberg Autonomous Systems and Software Programs (WASP) initiative towards mathematics related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The employment offers a unique career opportunity, with the intention that the successful candidate should be able to identify, develop and establish a long-term research agenda that contributes to the major challenges for Uppsala University and WASP in mathematics for AI. With the employment follows research resources that include funds for altogether four postdoctoral years, a doctoral student and project related costs up to 60 kSEK per year.
Duties:
Appointment Period: The position can be held for a maximum of six years. An Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to Associate Professor. If the Assistant Professor is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as Associate Professor.

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.
Research Expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in mathematical analysis with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and deep learning. Of particular interest is the applicant's international research experience and potential to strengthen the research area in Sweden.
Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in courses related to Artificial Intelligence.
Collaboration Expertise: Collaboration expertise is important and will be afforded consideration. Collaboration expertise is demonstrated by the ability to conduct research collaborations with industry and other academic institutions.
All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.
