Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Duties
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for one 2 year research position in machine learning for nuclear data development. The candidate is expected to develop and implement advanced methods from the field of machine learning in large-scale nuclear data evaluation algorithms. The work will include the use of nuclear model codes and the handling of experimental databases.  The goal is to develop new nuclear data libraries, with a high relevance for nuclear technology, well based in fundamental nuclear physics, with high predictive capabilities, and well-founded treatment of uncertainties. The work will be connected to the European framework programs SANDA (Solving Challanges in Nuclear Data for the Safety of European Nuclear FAcilities, H2020).  The group collaborates with researchers in Europe and the USA, and part of the placement may be done outside Uppsala. Supervision of undergraduate and PhD-student projects and teaching can be part of the working duties.

Prerequisites
A Ph.D. degree in Physics, Mathematics, Data Science, or Nuclear Engineering.  High confidence in programming and statistics. Proficiency in English.

Desired skills
Experiences in methods from the field of machine learning, statistics,  nuclear data development, reactor physics, or nuclear physics are considered to be a strong advantage.

The application should be written in English and include:

  • Letter of motivation, with a short description of your research interests, and why you feel you are a

good match for the project (max two pages, ideally one).

  • CV, including a description of relevant skills and experiences, as well as a full publication list.
  • Copy of degree diploma, other official transcripts.
  • Contact information for references, which can support your application if contacted. Include a short description of how these individuals are professionally related to you.
