Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 300 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. Duties/Project description: The research group of Daniel Espes at SciLifeLab/Department of Medical Sciences (https://www.scilifelab.se/fellows/daniel-espes/) works to increase the understanding of beta-cell physiology and adaptations in beta-cell mass in health and disease with emphasis on type 1 diabetes. Much of the work is of translational character and we are working with clinical trials in parallel with experimental studies. In the clinical setting we are working with interventional trials in order to identify novel treatments for type 1 diabetes and in vivo imaging studies in order to enhance our understanding of the disease. In addition, we work with radiolabeling and molecular imaging in collaboration with both the clinical PET center and the Preclinical PET Platform.

We are now looking for a qualified and highly motivated postdoctor who will primarily focus on increasing our understanding of how the beta-cell mass and pancreas anatomy is altered in type 1 diabetes. The projects will involve evaluations of radiological images, CT and MRI, as well as evaluations of positron emission tomography (PET) data.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree Radiology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. For this particular position it is a requirement that you are a medical doctor (MD) and a hold a specialist degree in radiology.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a robust background in radiology who independently can evaluate both CT and MRI scans. The applicant must be proficient in English speech and writing and have at least one published article in a well-renowned scientific journal within the field. You are expected to be able to work independently with both project planning, radiology examinations and scientific writing. You will also need to actively cooperate with other members of the group in both a preclinical and clinical environment. The applicant is further expected to actively take part in supervising new group members and students.

Documented work from adapting new techniques and/or establishing new protocols is a merit. Experience from work with free-breathing MRI techniques, large datasets and different imaging methods are meriting.

Personal qualifications and ability to work independently will be of great significance in the evaluation process.

The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experiences, CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, and the applicant’s thesis (or a draft). Please also submit contact information of previous research supervisors and if applicable letters of recommendations.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: February 1, 2022 or as otherwise agreed.
