Project description
This project examines the ecological and genetic mechanisms behind adaptive population differentiation in plants, and the capacity for adaptive evolution in natural populations in response to environmental change.

Duties
Research into the genetic and ecological mechanisms underlying adaptive differentiation among natural populations of the plant model organism Arabidopsis thaliana. The research will be conducted within the framework of an international research collaboration. The goals are to identify QTL (quantitative trait loci) contributing to local adaptation and to key traits involved in adaptation, to characterize the effects, genetic basis and geographic distribution of QTL alleles, and to examine whether adaptive evolution in local populations is constrained by trade-offs and pleiotropy, and/or the fixation of deleterious mutations. One focus will be on the genetic basis and adaptive significance of variation in flowering time. Duties include the establishment and monitoring of experiments in the field and under controlled conditions in the lab, QTL-mapping, data analysis, and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Specific subprojects can be tailored to the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

Qualifications required
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in evolutionary ecology or population genetics/genomics. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

In the ranking of eligible candidates, importance will primarily be given to scientific proficiency. In the assessment of scientific qualifications, special importance will be given to research in evolutionary ecology, population genetics, genomics and bioinformatic analysis, QTL-mapping, and ecophysiology. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as ability to work and interact efficiently in a group. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired
Experience in bioinformatic analysis is an advantage.
