The department is now looking for a research assistant (full time position, 9 months employment), for the project "Conflicts, Connections, Complexities: Towards a Multi-layered Understanding of Civil War", with project leader Desirée Nilsson. Start date 1 March 2022, or as otherwise agreed.

Project Description
The aim of this project is to better understand why some civil wars become complex interlinked patchworks of different conflict types while others do not. It poses the research question: why and how do some state-based armed conflicts become inter-linked with other types of organized violence, and how does this influence the resolution of these conflicts? The project uses quantitative and qualitative methods combined to address this pivotal research question. The empirical analysis draws on global datasets on organized violence as well as in-depth information on civil war cases such as Sudan, South Sudan and Syria.

Duties
The duties include various research assistant tasks such as organization and analysis of archival material; writing, editing, and formatting of research texts; preparing and transcribing interviews; preparation of drafts of research chapters and articles; management and analysis of quantitative data, as well as review of secondary literature.

Qualifications
Master degree in peace and conflict studies or equivalent; excellent English skills (both verbal and written); very good collaborative ability and ability to work independently; good knowledge of scientific methods; ability to independently analyze data and to develop scientific texts on a scientific basis. Emphasis will also be placed on personal suitability.

Merit
Experience of data collection/management and/or analysis, especially in peace and conflict research or similar; good knowledge of literature on the causes, dynamics and resolution of civil wars; good knowledge of statistics and statistics programs; interview experience.
