Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden's largest and broadest institution of its kind with about 250 employees, many of whom have an international background. Our research extends from the Earth's core to the atmosphere, from microscopic minerals and fossils to how rocks and oceans are formed, from the time of the Earth's birth until today. We map the evolution of the earth and life over several billion years and study the relationship between the atmosphere and the oceans with regard to climate change and sustainable development. The department has several strategic research themes as well as playing an integral role in the national Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS) and in the foremost European network for natural resources EIT RawMaterials (EIT RawMaterials).

Within the program Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics, we study our planet from its deep interior to the crust, and analyze processes that take place on a scale from individual crystals to tectonic plates. We target natural resources and hazards, magma plumbing systems, mountain building, and global chemical and geodynamic cycles. Our toolkit comprises classic approaches such as field work and petrography, as well as cutting-edge techniques. Some of our most exciting approaches include 3D analogue and numerical simulations, mineral-scale elemental analyses in the national microprobe facility hosted by our department, and high-temperature and pressure experiments simulating magmatic and metamorphic processes. Our solid knowledge and broad expertise foster a holistic understanding of our dynamic planet. For more information see: The Department of Earth Sciences

Description of subject area of the employment: Research program Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics, together with other programs in the Department of Earth Sciences, offer a BSc program in Earth Science, an MSc program in Earth Science with specialization in geology, and the international EU MSc program in Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management (SINReM). Our teaching at the bachelor level includes bedrock geology in theory and practice, fundamentals of mineralogy and petrology, structural geology and natural resources. At the masters level we are responsible for courses in mineralogy and petrology, Nordic regional geology, tectonics, ore deposits and prospecting, analytical methods in Earth Science, 3D modelling plus presentation & publication. Additionally, we offer field courses at both bachelor and masters levels.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. This expertise can have been achieved outside the academy through supervision, internal training, mentoring programs, etc. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to documented pedagogical merits in connection with the teaching duties described above.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

Administrative Expertise is important for the employment and will be given high consideration.
