Duties and projectdeskription
The candidate will participate in the European Union sponsored project SMARTLAGOON (https://www.smartlagoon.eu/)  that has an overall goal of developing monitoring and modelling systems that will help manage complex socio-environmental systems in a cost-effective manner. The main study site will be the Mar Menor Lagoon in Spain. New monitoring and modeling methods will also be tested at the Uppsala University Field Station at Lake Erken.  The post doc working with other project scientists, will be responsible for

  • Setting up, testing and applying lake water quality models first on Lake Erken and then transferring these models to the Mar Menor Lagoon.
  • Evaluating the use of alternative data sources on model performance.
  • Coupling lake and lagoon models to simulations of watershed water quality.
  • Help other project partners adapt watershed and lake/lagoon model for making water quality forecasts.
  • Evaluating the interactions between climate, watershed hydrology, watershed biogeochemistry, and lake or lagoon water quality, and how these interactions affect the uncertainty in management planning.

Qualifications required
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in limnology, oceanography, civil engineering, environmental science, or a related subject”. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Candidates must be able to express themselves excellently in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired

  • Experience with numerical models of lake/ocean hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry
  • Experience in calibrating coupled hydrodynamic and water quality models
  • Experience in developing methods to forecast future water quality
  • Experience in developing open source software to facilitate model simulations and forecasts
  • Literate in computer programing – experience in R and/or PYTHON and/or FORTRAN a plus
  • Ability to manipulate and analyze large data sets produced by numerical models.
