Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University is one of Europe’s most international, interdisciplinary, and successful research departments in molecular biosciences. The department's research is divided into six research programs covering everything from cell biology to biophysics and structural biology.

A postdoctoral position in computational chemistry is available in David van der Spoel’s research group. The group works on development of force fields for molecular dynamics simulations. Large-scale quantum chemistry calculations are combined with databases of experimental data as the foundation of the work. We use an in-house developed software-library to refine our models. The force field are tested using simulations of liquids and biological systems.

Duties
Perform high-throughput molecular simulations of chemical and biological systems and analyze the results by comparison with experimental data or data from quantum chemistry calculations. We study, for example, the physical properties of liquids and gases as part of the development of a new force field for molecular dynamics simulations. Development of code in C++ and scripting in Python. Parameterization of force fields.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor, you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, in chemistry, physics or similar, with specialization in e.g. physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, molecular dynamics simulations or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Very good programming skills are required in particular in C++11 and Python.

The candidate should have strong collaborative skills and prior experience of development work in a team.

Additional qualifications
Experience of working with big data or high-performance computing is a plus.
