Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has around 300 employees, including 110 faculty and 130 PhD students. More than 4000 students are enrolled annually.

Subject area
Real-time systems are computer systems that must produce the results of their computations within given timing constraints. Control systems in vehicles are examples of this.

Scheduling theory for real-time systems includes the study of scheduling algorithms, models of processes and computer resources, and algorithms for analyzing models to find out if their timing constraints can be guaranteed.

Scheduling theory is heavily influenced by algorithmics, and has ties to theoretical computer science, for example computational complexity theory. The subject also has ties to applied research in safety-critical embedded systems.

Duties
The project is to conduct internationally competitive, basic theoretical research in the subject area. This could be to design scheduling algorithms, to find new analysis methods or to classify scheduling problems by their computational complexity, among other things. Especially in multiprocessor scheduling there are major challenges in the area. A large part of the work concerns finding and proving mathematical statements.

The position is for four years of research, but will typically include 20% teaching extending the time to five years. Around one year of course work is included in this time.

Requirements
Candidates should have a Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent.

As a PhD student you are expected to learn and develop new skills. You should have aptitude, self-motivation and a genuine interest in the theoretical aspects of computer science. Knowledge in algorithmics and a certain degree of mathematical maturity are expected. A high degree of independence is expected from you in this work.

You should be able to express yourself in a structured and intelligible manner. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required. You are expected to be able to teach in English.

Additional qualifications
If you already have skills relating to real-time systems, then that would be welcome, but it is not a requirement. General knowledge of theoretical computer science is welcome. So is experience in writing mathematical proofs and in computer programming.

Application: The application must include a statement (at most 2 pages) of your motivation for applying for this position, including your research interests and a description of relevant skills. The application must also include a CV, degrees and grades (translated to English or Swedish), and a copy of the MSc thesis (or a draft thereof). If applicable, include any publications (and specific descriptions of your own contributions), links to online repositories of code and other artifacts (such as GitHub or Bitbucket) and any other relevant documents. State your earliest possible starting date. Contact information for at least one reference should be provided.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
