The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in ion-beam based physics. The research is expected to primarily consist of the use beams of MeV and keV ions for materials modification. The goal of the project is both to create and characterize nanostructures in bulk matrices and to nanostructure self-supporting materials with the ultimate goal of patterning 2D-materials such as graphene. Investigating the properties of the systems with complementary clean-room analytical techniques comprises an important part of the work. The successful applicant is also expected to contribute to applied and interdisciplinary research with a focus on ion beam analysis of materials, and contribute to fundamental method- and instrument development within ion beam based materials science. Taking over responsibilities in collaboration projects with industry is possible.
The main experimental facilities at Uppsala University’s Tandem Laboratory, where experimental work will be carried out, are a 5 MV tandem accelerator, a 350 kV high current implanter with associated ToF-MEIS system and a newly installed Low-Energy ion scattering system (LEIS).
Supervision of undergraduate and PhD-student projects may be part of the working duties.
Prerequisites: The applicant must have a PhD degree or equivalent. Well-documented research experience using ion beams for material research, fundamental studies or materials modifications is expected. A good fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction is required. Experience using clean-room analytical techniques such as SEM is considered highly beneficial. Experience in thin film technology is considered to be of advantage.
Employment Period: The period of employment is 2 years.
Starting date: Upon agreement
The department strives for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Most employees within the category to which this position belongs are male. Thus, female applicants are especially encouraged.
The application should contain a letter describing the applicant and her/his qualifications and research interests. It should also contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.
