Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The department and UCDP, is now looking for a research assistant for a one year, full-time employment, starting in February 2022.

Duties
The tasks consist of assisting the project management within the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) with coding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP's database as well as text writing pertaining to actors active in the conflicts in Syria. Work on improving the program’s data on organized violence in Turkey will also be included in the tasks.

Requirements
The applicant must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict studies or Political Science
  • Good knowledge of theories and concepts of war and peace
  • Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Very good knowledge of the conflict/s/ in Syria, specifically in regard to conflict actors and conflict dynamics
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict studies
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Documented good Turkish language skills.

Additional qualifications
Master's degree in peace and conflict studies or in political science.

Individual suitability will be strongly considered.

About the employment
The employment is a: temporary position (12 months). Scope of employment: 100 %. Starting date: 1 February 2022, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
