Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

For the department and for the project ViEWS– a political Violence Early-Warning System, we are now looking for 2-3 teaching assistants/’amanuenser’, for a part time employment (20%), for 5 months, starting in January 2022. The project is described in detail at: www.pcr.uu.se/research/views/.

Duties
Duties include teaching, administration or participation in research or artistic research. Expected tasks are data collection and preparation. Writing up narratives on ongoing conflicts. Programming tasks to improve presentation and data analysis in ViEWS as well as statistical analysis.

Requirements
For employment as a teaching assistant, it is a requirement that you are admitted as a student at undergraduate or advanced level. Furthermore, you should be an active student in the peace and conflict program at Uppsala University.

You should be able to work independently, have excellent knowledge of quantitative methods, including machine-learning methods. Furthermore, you are familiar with evaluation of prediction systems, very good working knowledge and experience of R and Python, has experience with GitHub, as well as excellent writing skills in English. 

Additional qualifications
Active master student within the Master's programme of peace and conflict studies at Uppsala University. Experience of developing templates and information material in Overleaf. Attention to detail and exactness, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal abilities are of high importance. Knowledge in survey methods, statistics and empirical social research are merited skills. Experience as project assistant is also an advantage.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 12. Scope of employment: 20%. Starting date; 17 January 2022, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
