Uppsala University, Department of Government

The Department of Government at Uppsala University provides a vibrant and internationally successful research environment. With approximately 60 faculty members and 40 PhD-students, we are recognized as one of the leading political science departments in the Nordic region.

One of the students admitted to the PhD-program at the Department of Government will be employed by the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF) which is a multidisciplinary social science resource centre under the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. This PhD project will be designed in collaboration with supervisors as an independent political science project in connection to research conducted at the institute (www.ibf.uu.se). In other respects, the same conditions apply as for other doctoral student positions. If you are interested in this position, please indicate this in your cover letter.

Some of the doctoral student positions will be linked to specific research projects, while the others are open positions. In those cases, the doctoral student, together with the supervisor, independently designs her/his dissertation project during the first year of the program. The project-related dissertations must fit within the framework of the respective project area. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in the project-related position described below.

One position in the doctoral program in political science is linked to the project on Societal security in a divided society – Comparative perspectives on the effects of sociotropic and personal threats in Sweden. The aim of the project is to increase knowledge about how the increase in open and organized violence, and the Covid pandemic, have affected democracy and societal preparedness in Sweden. The project area is further described here. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council.
