Description of the subject area: The field of clinical chemistry includes biochemical, immunological, and physico-chemical analyses and functional tests with the aim of detecting diseases and signs of disease and monitoring the effects of treatment. We welcome applicants with research experience in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health or infectious diseases. These disease areas constitute profile areas for Uppsala University and Region Uppsala.

Duties: Research, teaching, healthcare and administrative duties. In addition to own research, the position involves working with doctoral education and doctoral supervision in the subject area of clinical chemistry. The position also includes contributing to the positive development of research and education in collaboration with the faculty's researchers and teachers, and actively seeking external funding. The duties also include monitoring developments in your subject area and general societal developments that are material to the work of the University. This includes course responsibility and teaching at the undergraduate (first-cycle) and Master’s (second-cycle) levels. Administrative duties at the University and internal and external representative assignments may be required. One-third of the position consists of healthcare duties in the form of clinical work as a specialist physician at the Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology Section as part of the Academic Laboratory (Laboratory Medicine) operations of Uppsala University Hospital. This includes medical knowledge responsibility for a number of analytical methods and laboratory collaboration within Healthcare Region Mid Sweden. Administrative duties such as responsibility for clinic research, development and training council meetings and ALF management [management related to the agreement on medical education and clinical research] may be included.

Qualifications: To be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have shown both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, § 3). Under the Appointment Regulations (AR) for Uppsala University, having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers (AR, § 5).

Research expertise must have been demonstrated through independent research contributions and through achievements that are of very high quality by international standards. The applicant must have demonstrated expertise in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research, have demonstrated the capacity to obtain research funding in competition, and demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervising doctoral students. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community shall be assessed on the basis of such criteria as the quality and scope of scholarly publications (see AR, § 31).

Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by an extensive teaching portfolio (see AR, § 22). Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level. A prerequisite for having demonstrated teaching expertise is that applicants have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to activities at the University, comprising at least ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the teacher training for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of employment. The teacher training must include doctoral supervision.

The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If special circumstances apply, applicants who are unable to teach in Swedish are expected to acquire this ability within two years.

Applicants for this position must hold a degree of Master of Science in Medicine and have specialist expertise in clinical chemistry. If the applicant is not entered onto the Swedish Specialist Register, they must have submitted an application for entry onto the Swedish Specialist Register (clinical chemistry) to the National Board of Health and Welfare by the application deadline for this position. However, the applicant must have obtained Swedish registration as a specialist in clinical chemistry by the date the employment decision is made. If the person offered the position also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for employment as a consultant, the applicant will be offered employment combined with the position of consultant.

Assessment criteria: In the assessment of more than one qualified applicant, research expertise will be assigned greater weight than teaching expertise.

Research expertise refers to research qualifications. In assessing research expertise, research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and doctoral-level education, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as demonstrated ability to collaborate and engage with the wider community through research (AR, § 20). See also Guidelines and Assessment Criteria for Recruiting and Promoting Teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (GA, § 3).

Teaching expertise refers to teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, shall also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise (see GA, § 4).

Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical developmental work. Clinical development includes measures that have enhanced the quality or efficiency of health and medical care (see AR, § 24).

When the University appoints new teachers, those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations (AR, § 4).

Assessment criteria, other expertise: Administrative and management expertise are also significant to the position and will be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to communicate information about research and development work will be taken into account.

According to the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a manner that is effective and adapted to the purpose, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality (see GA, § 5).

Management expertise is demonstrated through an ability to lead activities and staff, make decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of common objectives. The ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated (see GA, § 5).

When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the University and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance (see GA, § 6).

The gender equality aspect shall be applied in connection with employment if it proves, after qualitative assessment, that two applicants of different genders have equivalent or near-equivalent qualifications and one of the genders is under-represented (accounts for less than 40 percent within the relevant position category and at the relevant workplace). The applicant’s parental leave, part-time work due to care of children or the like will be taken into account as qualifying work experience.
