Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The department and the project Unwilling or Unwanted? Explaining the decline of mediation in armed conflicts”, in short the "Mediation Decline project", with project leader Isak Svensson, is now looking to hire a temporary research assistant full-time, during the period 1 January to 30 June 2022. 

Duties: The most important task for the research assistant is to collect data on the presence of third-party mediation in armed conflicts, and civil society inclusion in negotiations. The research assistant will need to get involved in ongoing research and do smaller compilations of the state of knowledge, as well as do descriptive data analysis. The research assistant will also comment on texts produced during the project. Additional administrative tasks may be added. 

Requirements: For a deep understanding of conflict processes and violence dynamics, and to be able to work with advanced statistical methods, the position demands a master degree in peace and conflict studies, political science or international relations. Excellent skills in English (both speech and writing), skills in Excel, Stata or R (or equivalent), previous experience as a research assistant and/or data collection (especially on third-party intervention or negotiations) as well as previous administrative experience.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 January 2022, or as otherwise agreed.
