Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 100 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 researchers, teachers and professors.

The research group of Daniel Espes at SciLifeLab/Department of Medical Cell Biology (https://www.scilifelab.se/fellows/daniel-espes/) works to increase the understanding of beta-cell physiology and adaptations in beta-cell mass in health and disease with emphasis on type 1 diabetes. Much of the work is of translational character and we are working with clinical trials in parallel with experimental studies. The methods used in the preclinical lab include animal models of type 1 diabetes, isolation of rodent pancreatic islets, culture of rodent and human pancreatic islets, preparation and culture of induced pluripotent stem cells, islet transplantation, confocal microscopy, in vivo imaging techniques, qPCR, ELISA, plasma profiling from rodent and human samples. In addition, we also work with radiolabeling and molecular imaging in collaboration with the Preclinical PET Platform.

Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctor who will primarily focus on increasing our understanding of novel aspects of beta-cell physiology and how beta-cells may adapt to stress and immunological challenges. The projects will involve isolation and culture of pancreatic islets, in vivo imaging and measurements, a large number of in vitro techniques with emphasis on qPCR, plasma profiling, immune staining and histology as well as confocal microscopy.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in immunology, physiology or medical cell biology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a robust background in physiology and/or cell biology. The applicant must be proficient in English speech and writing and have at least one published first author article in a well-renowned scientific journal within the field. You are expected to be able to work independently with laboratory work in order to plan and conduct experiments as well as with analyzing results. You will also need to actively cooperate with other members of the group in both a preclinical and clinical environment. The applicant is further expected to actively take part in supervising new group members and students.

Personal qualifications and ability to work independently will be of great significance in the evaluation process.

Additional qualifications
Documented work or certificates from work with research animals is a merit. Documented work from adapting new techniques and/or establishing new protocols is a merit. Experience from work with larger datasets (plasma profiling data and/or proteomics) is a merit.

The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experiences, CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, and the applicant’s thesis (or a draft). Please also submit letters of reference or contact information of previous research supervisors.
