Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time employment for two years with access 2021-11-01 or as otherwise agreed.

The division of Solid State Physics (FTF) is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. At the division, we work with both basic and applied research. The research is related to energy and environmental issues as well as to life sciences applications in our various research areas. Preferably, we investigate the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and new materials that can be used as thin films in chromogenic technologies, solar cells, gas sensors, spin electronics and biomagnetic applications, as well as catalytic and photocatalytic materials.

Project description: The project is about developing and studying new photocatalytic materials for efficient purification of chemical pollutants in water, chemicals of emerging concern. Two classes of materials are to be studied: heterostructures to improve charge separation of excited electrons and holes in semiconductor oxides and surface functionalized semiconducting oxides with tailored wetting and acid-base properties. The project is funded by a new ERA.net project through the Swedish Research Council Formas.

Tasks: Synthesize photocatalytic nanomaterials using physical evaporation techniques (PVD) and wet chemical techniques. The tasks also include making material characterization and photocatalytic degradation of chemical pollutants on a laboratory scale, as well as participating in the coating of photocatalytic material on non-woven polymeric optical fibers and glass substrates. Tasks also includes international travel to project partners, report reporting and results documentation and dissemination.

Qualification requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

This position requires a doctorate in applied physics, materials science, materials chemistry or inorganic chemistry with previous good experience in photocatalysis, physical evaporation techniques (PVD),solgel synthesis, XRD, FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, SEM and kinetic analysis/modeling of chemical reactions.

We require good oral and written skills in English.

We require the ability to work focused, structured and with foresight, both individually and in groups, and to be able to collaborate in a transdisciplinary environment with colleagues both within and outside the department. We require proven skills of independent writing of scientific reports as the work duties include reporting to the ERA.net project and also to be responsible for the web based communication in the project.

Application instructions: Your application must include

  • Personal letter in English that describes you, your understanding of the task and why you are suitable for this position. (max 2 pages)
  • CV (max 2 pages)
  • List of publications
  • Copies of the doctoral degree, your course grades and other relevant qualifications
  • Copies of three publications of particular relevance
  • Names and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 November 2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for two years according to central collective agreement.

Scope of employment: 100 %
