Subject description: This two year researcher position is part of an international and interdisciplinary research project titled JUSTEMOTIONS; The Construction of Objectivity: An international perspective on the emotive-cognitive process of judicial decision-making. Through a comparative and multi-method qualitative design, including court observations, interviews, and shadowing of legal professionals, the JUSTEMOTIONS project studies the emotive-cognitive components of assessments leading to a decision to prosecute, to appeal, and the judgments of the courts in criminal cases. The JUSTEMOTIONS project is financed by the European Research Council (ERC) and involves 10 researchers at different Universities and data collection in four countries (USA, Sweden, Italy, and Scotland). This researcher position will continue the project’s research in the USA with an affiliation to Vanderbilt University via Professor Terry Maroney.
Work duties: The main duties of this researcher position are data collection in USA and qualitative analysis. Data collection includes court observations of criminal hearings, shadowing of judges and prosecutors, and conducting interviews with judges and prosecutors. The day-to-day management of the project also includes securing access to the field and planning of fieldwork; transcription and coding of data (using the software NVivo); communication with project colleagues in Sweden and other research sites; and participation at workshops in the participating countries. During the second year, the work also includes drafting and submitting two co-authored manuscripts to peer-reviewed international journals, and communicating findings through court presentations in the USA as well as internationally at seminars and conferences.
This is a non-faculty, non-tenure track, two-year term appointment. The Research Fellow’s appointment will be at the Department of Sociology, with all funding for the position coming from the JUSTEMOTIONS project.
