The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic
departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the
atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in
meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

Duties/Project description: This PhD project will analyze the spatial-temporal relationships between the occurrence of hydrological extremes, i.e. drought and flood events, and changes in human societies. The projects will focus on the study of  hotspots, i.e. human-environment systems across scales. The selected students will be affiliated to the Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS).

Requirements: The applicant shall have university science degree (MSc) in environmental sciences, geography, hydrology or related areas relevant to the PhD topic. Other degrees may also be considered, in particular civil and environmental engineering. General entry requirement, i.e. a degree at advanced level (Master's level) or fulfill the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level  (Master's level) or the equivalent. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, statistics, and basic computer skills. Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required.
