Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. Project description: 1-2 positions are available in the laboratories of Professor Jan Streuff at the Department of Chemistry - BMC. The Streuff Group is working in the fields of Homogeneous Catalysis and Organic Synthesis. The project will deal with the discovery of new reactivity and either focus on metallocene catalysis or on catalytic reductive bond formations and cleavages. PhD students are expected to actively engage in all aspects of the research, tasks will include the synthesis of reaction precursors, and catalysts, reaction optimization and application, analysis and interpretation of the results, full characterization of new products, precise documentation, as well as reporting the results on a regular basis and forward planning.

Duties: The main duties of PhD students are to devote themselves to their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20 %).

Requirements:

  • To be eligible for doctoral education, a basic higher education equivalent to at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, or essentially equivalent competences acquired in some other way, is required.   • To be admitted to the doctoral education programme in Chemistry with specialization in organic chemistry, 90 ECTS credits in chemistry or courses relevant to the chemistry field, including 40 ECTS credits in organic chemistry at second-cycle level, or essentially equivalent competences acquired in some other way, are required.   • Very good English proficiency in speech and writing.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to develop within and acquire the doctoral education.

Additional requirements: It is desired that you have a Master´s degree in Organic Chemistry or equivalent. Hands-on experience with NMR spectroscopic analysis and from working under inert gas atmosphere as well as a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry will be considered as advantage. Experience from research (for example BSc and MSc thesis projects, academic internships, company research…) will be seen as a strong merit. Ability of critical and analytical thinking are necessities and will therefore be valued at the selection of candidates.

PhD students at the department are typically engaged in teaching at BSc and MSc level. Prior experience from teaching/mentoring, also from non-academic contexts, and outreach can therefore be considered a merit.

It is important for us to keep our lab and instruments clean and organized. Accordingly, you must be very organized and systematic in your work, and ready to actively contribute to a pleasant and productive work environment.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 2022-01-17 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of position: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The doctoral education programme normally consists of four years of full-time studies. The position may be combined with teaching or other departmental duties (maximum 20%), which extends the employment by the corresponding time.
