Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Alva Myrdal Center for Nuclear Disarmament (AMC), was established in 2021 to provide teaching, research, and policy support about nuclear disarmament. AMC studies the whole process in which nuclear disarmament occurs and combines insights from different disciplines such as peace and conflict research, applied nuclear physics and international law.

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 85 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The Department and the AMC Working Group 3: Data on Nuclear Rivalries, Negotiations, and Agreements (work group leaders Margareta Sollenberg &Magnus Öberg), is now looking to hire a research assistant for 9 months, starting 1 October 2021.

Work assignments: The research assistant will write literature summaries, compile and describe existing data sets relating to nuclear weapons including nuclear proliferation, crises and rivalries between nuclear powers. The role will involve analyzing and visualizing economic, social and political data, and to write literature reviews. The research assistant will also assist in the development of new data through for instance pilot studies (data collection and coding), and will also together with the project leader, author a report describing the results.

Other administrative tasks may also occur.

Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict studies or Political Science or an education deemed equivalent
  • Good knowledge of political violence and conflict theory
  • Independent analytical ability
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Good knowledge of statistics
  • Good knowledge of STATA and/or R

Desirable / Merit:

  • A master degree within Peace and Conflict studies, or an education deemed equivalent
  • Knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in issues of nuclear weapons in international relations, nuclear disarmament issues and negotiations, interstate conflict, rivalry and escalation processes
  • Previous experience with similar work
