The Department of Women's and Children's Health conducts research, postgraduate education and training. Department activities are integrated with the Women and Children division at the University Hospital. More information is available on the website http://kbh.uu.se. Global Health and Migration is a profile area for the department.

The department is leading research and education in the field of global health and migration. Activities are grounded in 2030 Agenda, with special emphasis on sexual and reproductive health, child health and nutrition, implementation and migration. The education and research program address the health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, in humanitarian crises and in a migratory context. The unit makes important contributions towards equitable global health by developing and evaluating interventions and new strategies for tackling priority health problems. Research projects are often interdisciplinary and conducted in close collaboration with academic institutions and other partners around the world. 

Description of subject area: Global Health is the health as well as health problems and diseases of populations in a global context and transcends the perspectives and concerns of individual nations, and has global political and economic importance. It deals with needs of global improvement of health, reduction of gaps in health conditions, and protection against global threats against health with special emphasis on vulnerable groups.

Duties: The position includes teaching and research and collaboration within the area of Global Health. Development work, supervision and examination at undergraduate, Master’s anddoctoral  level. Participation in pedagogic development and evaluation of the Master’s Programme in Global Health. Initiate and independently manage research and development projects within the subject area. 

Eligibility requirements:  A person qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer is a person who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, section 4).

According to section 5 of the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AR), having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers.

Research expertise must have been demonstrated by the applicant’s independent, high-quality research contributions. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community must be assessed on the basis of such criteria as the quality and scope of scholarly publications (see AR, Section 34).The international track record required must be assessed according to the nature and specific circumstances of the subject.

The teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by an educational portfolio in accordance with Section 22 in the Appointment Regulations. A prerequisite for considering that the applicant has teaching expertise is that the applicant has completed at least ten weeks of teacher training for higher education that is relevant to the organisation and its activities, or has equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the teacher training for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of employment.

Assessment Criteria: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight. Teaching and research qualifications in the field of Global Health must be the prime consideration. Relevant working experience or research experience from a low- or middle-income country is meriting. Meriting in general is experience of interdisciplinary research.

Research expertise refers to research qualifications. In assessing research expertise, research quality research and independence must be the primary consideration. The scope of the candidate's research, mainly in terms of depth and breadth, will also be considered important. Ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research, capacity to obtain research funding on a competitive basis and a demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within the discipline concerned and with the community at large will also be given weight. Work or research experience from a low- or middle-income country is meriting.

Teaching expertise refers to educational qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Moreover, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, and also to connect the academic teaching theory and practice, will be given weight. Teaching expertise also includes a capacity for interaction with colleagues in and outside the University concerning academic teaching issues (AR, Section 22). In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations, and contribute to a positive development of activities.

The applicant should have documented experience in teaching in English.

Assessment criteria, other proficiency: Management expertise and administrative expertise are significant to the position and will afforded consideration. Furthermore, the ability to collaborate and engage with the wider community through research and development will be considered.

Management expertise is  demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate others, providing them with the conditions needed for efficient achievement of shared goals. Expertise may also be demonstrated by an ability to coordinate as well as contribute to creating commitment, participation and job satisfaction as well as ability to handle conflicts make further examples of demonstrated skill.

According to Appointment Regulations, Section 29, administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, by the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work efficiently and appropriate manner, and the ability to specify and keep to time frames. Such expertise includes overall operational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities, and the ability to work in a structured manner based on awareness of goals and quality. In assessing collaboration expertise, experience of and expertise in education and outreach work, editorship and other activities related to knowledge exchange between academia and the wider community, as well as experience of innovation and entrepreneurship, will be given weight. Parental leave, part-time work due to child care, trade union positions, military service and similar commitments are considered as employment experience and should be specified in the applicant’s list of qualifications.
