Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 100 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 researchers, teachers and professors.

Duties/Project description: A postdoctoral position is available in the group of Professor Mia Phillipson, Co-Director at SciLifeLab, for an applicant with extensive technical expertise in in vivo imaging of immune cell trafficking. Applicants with profound knowledge in either in vivo studies including comprehensive surgery in mice or advanced confocal microscopy could also possibly be considered. The current post doc project will mainly focus on the bacterial-immune cell interactions taking place in the GI epithelium.

Research group: The research group of Prof. Phillipson is aiming to uncover immune cell contributions to situations spanning from organ development and regulation of homeostasis to inflammation and tissue restoration following ischemic injury. By increasing our understanding of immune cell contribution to both detrimental and regenerative situations, novel strategies to prevent, control and treat diseases by immunotherapies will be revealed. This is achieved by employing a wide range of techniques for studies of immune cell trafficking and effector functions in vivo, in parallel with functional studies of different disease models with strong translational focus. The Phillipson laboratory is located within a unique environment allowing functional and longitudinal in vivo studies, and in close proximity to the largest national infrastructure within Life Sciences in Sweden, SciLifeLab, with Prof. Phillispson as co-director. Further, observations from Prof. Phillipson’s laboratory have resulted in a successful spin-off company now in clinical phase (Ilya Pharma).

The Phillipson laboratory is equipped with state of the art technologies that enable in vivo observations of mucus dynamics, bacterial interactions with mucus, epithelium and immune cells, intravascular leukocyte-platelet-endothelial cell interactions and blood flow. Several of our imaging setups are partly developed in-house and used in conjunction with our expertise in physiology to enable longitudinal in vivo studies. In addition to our high-speed confocal in vivo microscopes, we also have several other types of microscopes as well as equipment for flow cytometry, cell sorting, protein and gene array techniques, and bioinformatics competence both within our own lab and through our department of Medical Cell Biology and the SciLifeLab core facilities.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in immunology, physiology or cell biology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

It is an absolute requirement that the candidate is strongly self-motivated and enthusiastic about both leading projects and collaborating in the other projects of the group. Our group is a young, dynamic and very enthusiastic research team with a well-established collaborative network and strong funding. We are looking for a person that shares the same will and drive to pioneer the complex field of immunophysiology.

The candidate must have/be:

  • Degrees, publications or other proof of knowledge in immunology and/or physiology, preferably with a specialization in the study of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Well organized, results-driven and motivated
  • Able to complete complex tasks
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, analytical, and protocol development skills
  • High-level computer literacy (experience in advanced image analysis is a merit)
  • Strong communication skills in English and the social skill to make use of them

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: As agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to central collective agreement.
