Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 100 employees, of which around 25 are doctoral students, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 researchers, teachers and professors.

The position is within the research group Cell Analysis Tools at the Department of Medical Cell Biology and linked to VINNOVA's new competence center Additive Manufacturing for the Life Sciences (https://www.uu.se/en/research/am4life/).

Duties: Improved 3D cell culture models generated using different types of microfluidic technology and bioprinting will most likely be very important in the future for screening of new drugs to combat cancer. Cell spheroids are 3D aggregates of one or several cell types that have been generated in vitro. Due to their 3D structure the spheroids mimic the complexity of tissues to allow for more representative studies of cell behavior and drug responses as compared to traditional 2D cell culturing techniques.

The successful candidate will be part of a larger effort to develop microfluidic systems for high-throughput production of cancer cell spheroids with varying cell and matrix composition for screening of new cancer drug candidates. Bioprinting will also be used to develop new and advanced 3D cell culture model systems for drug screening. Participation in teaching in postgraduate education and undergraduate education related to 3D printing as well as some supervision of students may be included in the tasks (however to a maximum of 20% of full time), as well as being involved in writing grant applications.

Requirements: We welcome applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates with a doctoral degree in biotechnology, biomedicine or engineering. Practical experience in additive manufacturing and good knowledge in CAD is required. Personal qualities, ability to work independently and at the same time be able to interact with other researchers both nationally and internationally is very important. Very good ability to communicate in English in speech and writing is required.

Additional qualifications: Experience with method development for applications within the life sciences with the help of 3D printing is a merit. Experience with bioprinting and microfluidics is a merit.

The application should contain a cover letter (maximum 1 page) with a brief description of relevant work experiences, a short CV with a list of publications, copies of diplomas and certificates of higher academic degrees as well as contact details. Please also provide contact information for at least two references.
