Uppsala University , Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary position, 100%, 4 months, 2021-09-01--2021-12-31

The magnetism group within the Solid State Physics division deals with basic and applied experimental research on magnetic materials. For example, a striking class of materials, so-called quasicristals, are being investigated. The advertised position is tied to project “Functional Quasicrystals? ”Harnessing the complexity of aperiodic intermetallic compounds” (FuncQC) financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg  Foundation, which deals with the design, synthesis, and structural and physical (e.g. electrical, magnetic) properties of these materials.

Work duties: Participation in the ongoing project and activities related to quasicrystals and their approximant crystals. The research to be performed involves measurements of  structural, magnetic, electrical and thermal properties, and the analysis of the obtained data. The research activities will be carried out in close collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Geosciences from Uppsala University, as well as co-workers from Stockholm University and KTH.

Qualification requirements: Ph.D. in Solid State Physics or equivalent, with specialization  in  Condensed Matter Physics and Magnetism

Advanced knowledge about the specific structural properties of quasicrystals and their approximant crystals is required. First-rate experimental skills concerning the study of the magnetic and electrical properties of quasicrystals and their approximant crystals, including SQUID magnetometry, temperature and magnetic field dependent electrical (resistance) and thermal (heat capacity) property measurements and their analyses is also a requirement. Experience with the design and synthesis of  quasicrystals and their approximant crystals, as well as the collection and analysis of X-ray diffraction data is preferable.

Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Personal qualities such as a strong motivation for quality improvement and performance and the ability to lead and run research projects while interacting with other researchers and students are very important. Applicants must be purposeful, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.
